I am ridiculous about language, and for that reason, it doesn't seem at all strange that I'm trying to learn five different languages. I'm almost fluent in French, am trying to regain more of my fluency in Spanish, and am trying to teach myself Italian, Finnish, and Turkish—at the very least, the grammatical structures of the last two, because having conquered two Romance languages, the third is fairly simple. English is a whore of a language, but I love her anyway, and Turkish and Dutch I keep around because with their wacky pronunciation, every word is a party in which your tongue is an irritating third wheel.

For no particular reason, I'm considering a major in linguistics and a minor in cognitive science. [Points for seeing through sarcasm, and Madame ought to know that I will still study French because I love it so.]

I think quite highly of myself as both a writer and a person in general, but I try not to show it too much because I can't stand it when other people do that to me and hypocrites are silly people. My aspiration is to become a bestselling novelist, and I've since decided that I'm quite willing to take day jobs circling around coffeemaking, professing linguistic love at a college level, bookselling, and/or editing until I achieve that aspiration.

I am almost as obsessive about hockey as I am about language, and my team of choice is the Colorado Avalanche. I'd imagine that if I had been raised around a different team, I wouldn't feel quite so strong an attachment, but it is what it is. [I don't care what you say, Peter Budaj is fantastic and Ruslan Salei is badass.] The best games to go to are the ones at the Pepsi Center against Detroit during a good season, because the atmosphere is positively electric and so much fun to be a part of. The sport that I actually participate in is fencing [I currently fence foil and would love to expand into both sabre and épée], which I love dearly even though I'm rather mediocre, and I also enjoy playing soccer even though it makes my knees ache and my throat fill up with phlegm.

I love all sorts of music, though particularly that with a swagger to the beat and preferably things that I can either sing or dance to. Nightwish, Dragonforce, Benise, Shakira, Flogging Molly, and The Dropkick Murphys are perennial favorites, and my tastes of the random time period also include The Fratellis, Massilia Sound System, VNV Nation, Flook, Lúnasa, and Gaelic Storm.

This LJ contains a great deal of ranting and raving about general relationshippy stuff for the most part, and for the rest of it, it's mostly about things that aren't too terribly interesting to those who don't know me. If you really want to watch me, go ahead, and leave me a note in the public post [and prepare to be bombarded with things that may or may not be explained].
